Probation and Pretrial Services Office:
The Probation Office for the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania provides services to 15 U.S. District Judges and 6 U.S. Magistrate Judges, and covers 25 counties in western Pennsylvania. The Probation Office headquarters is located in the U.S. Courthouse, Suite 3330, 700 Grant Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. There are two divisional offices, Erie and Johnstown. This vacancy is in the Pittsburgh office. Our office consists of a total staff complement of 68 full-time employees.

Occupational Information:
The Drug Analysis Technician provides technical support services to officers throughout the district in the area of client substance abuse testing. The position assists officers' investigation and supervision goals by performing laboratory analysis on urine specimens to detect the presence of drugs of abuse. The primary focus of the job is performing the requirements of offender drug testing and detection. Incumbent's work affects the timeliness and accuracy of the probation office drug testing program and permits officers to focus their time on investigative and supervision duties. Omissions or errors by incumbent could result in missed deadlines and added delays to the Court. Work is performed in a laboratory setting. Light lifting required. Work requires some contact with persons who may have violent backgrounds. These contacts occur in a generally controlled office setting, with a probation officer present and accessible duress alarm.

Representative Duties:
•Perform laboratory/chemical analysis for detection of controlled substances. Maintain appropriate records. Perform these duties while observing necessary safety precautions and by using appropriate protective equipment such as gloves, safety glasses, lab coats/smocks, etc.

•Certify the validity of urine test results by signing the Collection and Testing Certification on the Chain of Custody form, and maintaining records of positive results.

•Enter testing data in the appropriate database on a daily basis, and maintains positive specimens for further result confirmation.

•Collect and distribute test results to appropriate staff members.

•Record information for reports and investigations related to drug testing, including blind sample studies at the contract laboratory, and quality control of non-instrumented handheld devices.

•Maintain the urinalysis program, including supplies, testing equipment, and laboratory organization.

•Collect data and complete forms in support of the drug testing program, including reporting lab results, sending out samples, and retrieving results from the website. Calibrate and perform maintenance.

•Report all hazardous or safety-related incidents encountered in the course of duty to the appropriate authority for entry into the Safety and Information Reporting Systems (SIRS).

•Perform other duties as assigned, including laboratory certification and training as scheduled, and be available for conference calls on an occasional basis.

•Performs related duties as required by the Chief Probation Officer and the Court.

Qualifications:
To qualify for the position of Drug Analysis Technician, an applicant must possess two years of lab experience in chemistry, toxicology, or clinical lab technician experience. A Bachelor's Degree in bio/chem is highly preferred.

Must possess the ability to communicate accurate and timely information (both orally and in writing) to individuals within the probation office and the Court. Must also possess the ability to interact tactfully with a variety of people and work independently. Must be of sound ethics and judgment.
