Oregon Brothers Drop Rifles, Free Elk Calf Stuck In Fence
STARKEY, Ore. (KDKA) – Two Oregon brothers are being credited with putting down their rifles to help free a tangled young elk.
The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation first posted photos and details of the rescue.
The brothers said they were hunting in Starkey, Oregon when they spotted the elk tangled in a barbed wire fence.
Hunter Jordan Say said he first tried to free the calf by himself, but it was too tangled in the fence.
He called his brother Jerin Say and the two were able to use tools to pry the clips off the fence post to untangle the calf.
The brothers say the calf sat there stunned for at least five-minutes after they freed it from the fence.
They poked the elk with a stick, and it got up, and ran off with no problems.
Even more amazing, the brothers say this is the second elk they have had to rescue from that same fence in the past couple years.
"I'm all about fair chase but when you see a helpless animal, you have to put the hunt aside. All I could think about is helping that calf and making sure she had a chance to live," Jordan said.
Elk hunting isn't a big sport here in Pennsylvania, with the Pennsylvania Game Commission reporting only about 900 total elk in the state.
