Route 28 Construction Complete, All Lanes To Reopen
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - It's taken over six years and cost more than $100 million, but today, PennDOT and the governor gathered to mark the complete reopening of Route 28.
It's almost hard to think of Route 28 without all the barricades. However, they are all going away this afternoon.
The barricade that runs down the middle of Route 28 was expected to be removed by 4 p.m., meaning all lanes will be open for the evening rush hour. However, rain caused some delays and the total reopen for the lanes is still on hold.
It appears the total reopen will happen around the tail-end of rush hour or right after.
"Final details. In 2007, we said we'd deliver this project for $120 million. We brought that in 10 percent under budget at $106 million for construction," PennDOT District 11 Executive Dan Cessna said. "After today, we're going to lift the restrictions and Route 28 will be construction-free for the foreseeable future."
"Now, we can see that from Kittanning to beyond the airport, you can travel without having to stop for a traffic light, without having to stop at the 31st Street Bridge or the 40th Street Bridge, or being confused as to which lane you're going to have to go into," Gov. Tom Corbett said.
Crews are finishing up some concrete work on a wall, which is expected to be completed this afternoon.
Officials are already talking about the next project for Route 28, but it will likely be a couple years down the road.
