1 Dead, 2 Injured In South Side Pedestrian Accident

SOUTH SIDE (KDKA) - A pedestrian died and another was injured after being hit by a dump truck on the South Side Wednesday morning.

Police confirmed that one man was killed, a woman was critically injured, and the driver of the truck was also taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital.

According to police, the white, one-ton dump truck jumped the curb on East Carson Street just before the Smithfield Street Bridge around 7 a.m.

KDKA's Brenda Waters Reports:

Police say they believe two people were crossing East Carson Street at the Smithfield Street Bridge when the driver of the dump truck plowed into them from behind.

One man was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as 43-year-old Christopher Williams of Carrick.

A woman, who has not yet been identified, was taken to Mercy Hospital.

"She is in critical condition with head injuries. We also took the driver of the dump truck to the hospital as well to have him checked out," Pittsburgh Public Safety Spokeswoman Sonya Toler said.

The driver, who has not been named, reportedly suffered a medical emergency. According to investigators, he lost consciousness just before the crash.

The driver has not been identified, but police say he owns a local construction company and was delivering breakfast to crew members at a work site.

KDKA's Lynne Hayes-Freeland Reports:

Due to the condition of the injured pedestrian, police Wednesday morning had been unable to talk with her.

The T station is also across the street and investigators planned to look to see if there is any surveillance video.

"We will be looking to see if that showed anything. That's all part of what the accident investigation unit will include in their report," Toler said.

KDKA's Heather Abraham Reports:

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office says Williams died of blunt force trauma to the upper body.

The investigation is ongoing.

The Smithfield Bridge was closed for several hours Wednesday, as was East Carson Street at Arlington Avenue during rush hour while the investigation was underway.
