CBS NFL Insider Jason La Canfora: Blount Was 'Fairly Popular In That Locker Room'

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - CBS NFL Insider Jason La Canfora joined the Starkey and Mueller Show to talk about the team cutting ties with running back LeGarrette Blount and why the Steelers defense isn't as good as it used to be.

When it comes to Blount, La Canfora points out what made the decision to cut him easy for the Steelers.

"When you are a guy who, lets face it, is a part-time role player at best and there aren't a lot of cap and cash ramifications to letting you go and you do some things like this that create a lot of negative attention from the team, then you make yourself very easy to be seen as extraneous," La Canfora said.

La Canfora went on to talk about what kind of guy Blount was and how he was viewed by his teammates.

"The team also knows overall he was a good guy by and large and that he was fairly popular in that locker room," said La Canfora.

Looking at the Steelers defense and their struggles, La Canfora points out that the Steelers may have become victims of their own success.

"You have a scheme that now has become increasingly prevalent," La Canfora told us. "In 2004, sort of their heyday, when they were the top three in pretty much every defensive category, I think at that time there were four other teams running the 3-4, now half the league is running the 3-4. You've got teams looking for the same assets you are, and the competition for them is much more difficult."
