McMurray Students Go Formal To Raise Money For Turkey Fund

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - There are so many ways that people have been raising money for the 33rd Annual KDKA-TV Turkey Fund.

This afternoon Rick Dayton was in Washington County, where kids were dressed in their finest.

The kids at McMurray Middle School started small. Homeroom teachers asked kids to bring just $1 to give to the KDKA-TV Turkey Fund.

"Today is 'More Formal that Normal Day,' and we are supposed to dress up today and have a formal lunch -- and we're [going to] eat turkey," sixth grader Nate Daniels said.

The idea for "More Formal Than Normal" actually came from older brothers and sisters, who were going to prom back in May.

The kids decided right then they wanted to do something special to help someone else.

"They are so excited. I think they have always wanted to dress up and come to school and give and care about others, but maybe they didn't know if it was cool or not and so to see the sixth graders doing it, it's OK. They feel that they can participate and feel comfortable," McMurray Elementary School teacher Paige Seelhorst said.

"We all have to bring in a dollar to raise money on the Turkey Fund. Whenever the whole class -- 100 percent of it -- participates, we get a feather on the turkey and then we get our names on the news, the McMurray News," Morgan Merdian said.

"I hear them encouraging one another. I see them being concerned about children who don't have a Thanksgiving dinner, being able to contribute to make that happen for them," fifth grade teacher Debbie Miller said.

From the classical music playing in the cafeteria to hand-wrapped silverware being handed out by volunteers, everything is extra special for their fancy feast.

"Tablecloths, centerpieces. These are all new. This is actually the first time we have ever done this. This is the first year," Ryan Liebscher said.

"I think it feels good that I know that I am helping people that maybe aren't as fortunate as us," sixth grader Isabelle Meyers said.

The official campaign at McMurray Elementary runs through Friday, but they have already raised more than $1,300 for the Turkey Fund.
