Light Up Night, WPIAL Championship Crowds Could Cause Parking Problems

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- If you're planning to go Downtown for Light Up Night on Friday, be sure to bring your patience.

Getting there, and then finding a place to park, could put you in a not-so-festive mood.

It's a fun-filled night that kicks off the holiday shopping season and shows off Pittsburgh's downtown.

"We have a huge celebration," says Jeremy Waldrup, of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership. "Four stages, it's going to be an amazing experience. Eight Christmas trees will be lit up tomorrow night. We're going to finish it off with the BNY Fireworks Finale at 9:30."

If that's not enough to get you in the city, they'll also be playing football at Heinz Field. It's the WPIAL Championship games, and lots and lots of people are expected to attend.

"Say between 300,000 and 400,000 people in greater downtown. It's going to be a pretty big night," said Waldrup.

It will bring a lot of cars downtown.

"We have tons of parking available," Waldrup said. "I'd say get here early to avoid the crowds, and spend some time down here."

Four years ago, in Nov. of 2010, violence broke out at Liberty and Wood Streets during Light Up Night. Pittsburgh Police are working overtime Friday to make sure there are plenty of cops to keep you safe.

"We've been working with the police. We have 54 years of experience. They are going to be here in full force to help celebrate the evening with us," Waldrup added.
