35 Years Later, Jubilee Kitchen Continues To Serve Community
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Hundreds of people in the Pittsburgh area got free Thanksgiving meals today from charitable organizations.
For people at the Jubilee Kitchen, it's just one way of giving back to the community.
Every day for the past 35 years, the Jubilee Kitchen in the Hill District has served up a hot meal for the homeless, the destitute and others down on their luck.
"The kitchen is a blessing right here in the community," Greg Harrington said.
Thanksgiving is always special. In addition to the turkey, potatoes and stuffing, the volunteers serve as waiters and waitresses to serve the less-fortunate.
The kitchen's mission is more than just food. It helps entire families like the Smithsons with winter clothing, shoes, job training, counseling and other assistance.
"It's bad out there, but we come to her and she does everything you can to help people," Elizabeth Smithson said.
Sister Liguori Rossner, who founded the kitchen and is still the executive director, says it all takes people pulling together.
"The donations and the volunteers and the staff, they go out of their way to help people who are on the edge. So, we're grateful for that. It's overwhelming to me," Rossner said.
Thirty five years of people helping other people. That kind of generosity of spirit is something to be thankful for.
