State Police: Suspect In Armstrong Co. Tavern Theft May Be Woman

KITTANNING (KDKA/AP) - Police say a masked suspect who stole a cash register from an Armstrong County bowling alley hours before it caught fire may be a woman.

State police tell the Valley News Dispatch that surveillance photos from the Greendale Tavern and Lanes show a very thin person wearing a hooded sweatshirt, dark bandanna and sunglasses taking the register.

That happened about between 11 p.m. and midnight Nov. 24 at the business along Route 85 in Valley Township.

The owner reported the robbery and stayed at the business until about 1 a.m. Nov. 25.

The business closed an hour later, but by 3:30 a.m. the bowling alley was on fire.

Police say the thief appeared familiar with the business and the register, and knew to cut a wire before stealing the machine, which contained $643.

Last week, investigators said the fire and theft were being investigated as two separate incidents, but police wanted to question the masked thief.

"We're checking to see if the theft is related to the fire or if it's a totally unrelated incident. We don't know that at this point. If we can identify the person who took the cash register, he would definitely be a person to talk to about this fire, if he has anything to do with it. Maybe not," Trooper Terry Geibel said last Tuesday.

The next day, police released the surveillance photos of the masked suspect.
