Driver Narrowly Escapes After Mt. Washington Wall Collapses & Crushes Car

MT. WASHINGTON (KDKA)- A delivery driver is lucky to be alive after his car was crushed by a wall collapse in Mt. Washington.

According to police, the incident happened around 6:30 p.m. Saturday along Wyoming Street, near the intersection with Virginia Avenue.

A pizza delivery driver had parked his car and walked away shortly before the wall collapsed and crushed the car.

The car was crushed by dozens of rocks and bricks that fell from the wall.

"The wall actually collapsed as he was trying to get out," said neighbor Eric Jackson. "So, he was very close to being killed."

The driver was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital, where he was treated and released.

"His car was completely buried. When I came out to get to my group, I barely realized there was a car out there. I wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't for the honking and the headlights showing," Jackson said.

The property owner called in an engineer and a contractor who were on site Monday assessing the damage.

Experts say wet weather combined with freezing and thawing conditions likely fueled the collapse.

Neighbors say they the wall didn't seem to be in good shape.

"It's been bulging out for years and I just knew it was a matter of time before it fell," Mike Beatty said.
