Center Seeks To Aid Public Education

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - Dean Olga Welch, head of the Department of Education at Duquesne University and founder of the Canevin Center for Educational Transformation and Social Justice joined Chris Moore to discuss the inequality of education, especially when it comes to poorer school districts.

Welch says the mission of the Center is to increase the community impact of equity initiatives using social justice projects.

Welch urged that everyone as a community needs to come together to support education equality.

Moore pressed Welch, asking why people in better off school districts should care about other districts where they do not live.

"We fund what we care about. We are funding a hierarchical system. You're going to pay, whether you're paying for the opportunity to go to a quality school or whether you're paying for a system for prisons or for other kinds of institutions to house children who might not have the opportunity." Welch said. "Now, I'm not saying that poor districts necessarily lead to prisons, but I am saying that anytime that you support inequity, anywhere, you're going to pay as a community."

Chris Moore can be heard every Sunday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
