United Way Seeking Volunteers For Free Tax Preparation Program

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - It's tough to believe, but tax season is just around the corner and the United Way is already gearing up.

If you're looking for a way to give back, this may be your perfect opportunity.

United Way of Allegheny County is recruiting 250 volunteers to prepare taxes for hard working, low-income individuals and families.

"It's a great way to develop some additional skills and become IRS certified, but also to give back to the community to those that most need a little bit of extra help," Kiandra Foster said.

Volunteers will need to commit three or four hours each week from January through the middle of April.

Don't worry if you don't have any experience with tax prep.

The only requirements are being comfortable with people and a computer.

"We have training tracks for people with little to no experience, as well as those people with lots of experience. Once you go through the training, you do take an IRS certification test, we do guide you through all of that to make sure you have all the information you need," Foster said.

This will be the seventh year United Way has offered free tax service.

This year, there will be 16 sites, giving people more locations than ever to choose from.

"They're very appreciative of the services. Of course, they're not having to go to a paid preparer to get them and also, they're sure they're getting their full refund at tax time," Foster said.

Volunteers select their hours and tax site location and must sign up before Wednesday, Dec. 31.
