Police Issue Warning Following Rash Of Westmoreland Co. Break-Ins

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police say Unity and Hempfield townships are getting hit hard by thieves.

The targets are cars and then homes.

"The individuals are going to the cars that are unlocked, rummaging through them, finding garage door openers and entering into people's homes using garage door openers," said State Police Tpr. Steve Limani, "which is a different level of crime altogether."

And the thieves are hitting the homes hard, while people are asleep inside those homes.

"They've gone into about a half-dozen homes, removed laptops, purses, wallets, cash, jewelry," said Limani. "They're doing this while people are sleeping, so it's very alarming someone would actually go into someone's home while they are there."

State police warned residents and have some simple advice.

"We're asking residents to 100 percent, all of the time, if they do have valuable items in the car, including garage door opener, remove that from your vehicle while it's left outside," Limani said. "If you see suspicious activity, call the state police or your local police department."

Police say times have changed.

"Unfortunately we are in a day and age where you can never leave your car unlocked, no matter where you are at," said Limani. "Especially in your driveway with your garage door opener in it, giving them access to your home."

Police say they have no suspects at this time.
