Stewart: No Reason For Drop-Off At Catcher

PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)-Pirates catcher Chris Stewart joined Bob Pompeani on Saturday at PirateFest.

Stewart said that Russell Martin earned every cent of his new contract in Toronto and he wishes Martin well, but thinks that there won't be a drop-off.

"I don't see why Francisco Cervelli and myself cannot do the same job that he did last year. Obviously, maybe the power might be down a little bit. But as far as going out, taking care of business on the field, making sure our pitchers are doing what they need to be doing, that's all stuff that's very possible for us to do, and we can add some wrenches of our own into the mix too," Stewart said.

Pompeani asked Stewart how confident he is with the pitching staff after the recent moves that were made.

"We are extremely confident. Some people mentioned that there were question marks going into the offseason, but I didn't see those question marks. I saw those legitimate guys who went out and proved that they're capable of pitching in the big leagues successfully last year," Stewart said. "I'm truly excited as a catcher being able to catch these guys."
