Child Severely Burned By Firecracker In Sheraden

SHERADEN (KDKA) – A child is recovering after being burned by a firecracker Monday night.

According to police, the incident happened in the 3000-block of Zephyr Avenue in Sheraden around 10:30 p.m.

When paramedics arrived, they found a 12-year-old boy had suffered severe injuries.

"A mother called saying her son found a firecracker and set if off while it was in his hand," said Sonya Toler, Pittsburgh Police's spokesperson.

Police haven't identified where the firecracker was stored. Only that it wasn't purchased during the holiday season. It had been in the home for some time.

"He had some severe damage to his hand, his arm and his chest area," said Toler.

At least one neighbor reported hearing a bang Monday night, but didn't know the source of the noise. Others didn't seem aware of what happened; although, there were a lot of homes with toys outside indicating a lot of kids in the neighborhood.

"This is not the normal time of year that we hear about these kind of injuries," Toler said.

The boy in question was not unsupervised. His mother was at home at the time of the accident and police say it is too soon to tell whether there will be any charges filed in this case.

However, they do say that in the case of fireworks, parents have to take responsibility for keeping children safe.

The child was taken to Children's Hospital and was last listed in stable condition.
