Mystery Donor Slips $1,000 Bill Into Morgantown Salvation Army Kettle

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - A mystery donor in Morgantown is continuing a tradition that began in the late 1970s.

Every year since at least 1978, someone has slipped a $1,000 bill into a Salvation Army kettle in the city.

Salvation Army Lt. Allen Adkins tells media outlets that he'd heard about the mystery gift. But this is the first time he has encountered it.

Adkins says he wants the donor to know that he is thankful for the gift.

The organization's red kettle campaign raises money to help people throughout the year.
