Pittsburgh Bald Eagles Getting Ready To Hatch New Eaglets This Spring

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh's bald eagles are keeping house once again.

Early Christmas morning, they were seen tending to their nest in Hays in anticipation of hatching new eaglets this spring.

"It's looking real good that we're going to have another successful year," said Gary Fujak, of the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Hopes are high that we'll be seeing new eggs in the nest as early as early February since this pair has been nothing if not productive.

They produced an eaglet two years ago, three healthy eaglets last year and are working on an early start this new season.

"The two were busy this morning. The mother and father were arguing, looked like they were putting furniture in an empty room," said Greg Pasternak, a bird watcher.

Birders like Pasternak, of Upper St. Clair, are back on the South Side river trail trying to get a glimpse of the eagles and observe all of the domestic drama.

Pasternak: "He was putting a twig one place and she would put it over there."

KDKA's Andy Sheehan: "Like us?"

Pasternak: "Like us. Do what your wife tells you to do, and smile."

But this year, home viewers will have an even better vantage. The Audubon Society and PixController have mounted not one but two web cameras covering all the angles.

Sheehan: "It's kind of an invasion of privacy, isn't it? There having this very intimate act and there's two cameras up there."

Fujak: "I guess it is an invasion of privacy, but the eagles don't know any better. They're still going to do their thing."
