Residents Evacuated From Apartments After Body Is Found In Pitcairn

PITCAIRN (KDKA) -- Residents of a Pitcairn apartment building were forced to evacuate into the cold this afternoon after a body was found inside.

The discovery was made around noon in a second-floor apartment in the 200-block of Center Avenue.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office has now identified the man as 41-year-old Keith Acklin. They say he died of natural causes. His family had not seen him for about 12 hours.

The apartment where the body was found was reportedly in filthy and deplorable condition.

A woman and 2-year-old child also lived there with the man. The woman is expected to be charged with endangering the welfare of a child because of the deplorable conditions.

Hazmat crews were called in. They declared the apartment a bio-hazard.

"Due to the living conditions within the residence, at that time we did contact Hazmat," Scott A. Farally, of the Pitcairn Police Department, said. "The Hazmat team was notified, American Red Cross was notified also because upon notifying the Hazmat team, they also requested that the residents not be within that structure."

A warming tent was set up for the evacuated residents.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office removed the man's body this afternoon. His death remains under investigation.

The evacuees have since been allowed back into their homes, but the Health Department has isolated the apartment where the body was found.
