Warrant Issued For Woman Accused Of Stealing Checks From Charity

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A warrant has been issued for a woman accused of stealing from a Fayette County charity.

Police say the woman stole checks from Sisters of Charity in Uniontown, which is run by a group of nuns, totaling $600.

Daughters of Charity works with poor and marginalized people living in Fayette County.

Police say the woman was able to get a hold of two checks and cashed one at a bank and one at a mini-mart.

They say the ID used to cash them belongs to 33-year-old Verna Johnston of Dunbar. She faces felony theft and forgery charges.

Police are looking for Johnston.

It's unclear how she got the checks.

The Sisters of Charity declined to comment on the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
