Two Women Accused Of Stealing From Police Credit Union

PITTSBURGH (KDKA)- Two women are facing a long list of charges, accused of stealing items and customer information from a local credit union.

Police arrested 50-year-old Bonnie Hendzel, who worked as a cleaning woman at the Greater Pittsburgh Police Federal Credit Union, and her friend, 50-year-old Mary Tumminello.

Both are accused of stealing drinks, coffee, creamer, toilet paper, paper towels and customer's personal information from the Greater Pittsburgh Police Federal Credit Union on Chartiers Avenue.

According to the criminal complaint, credit union managers noticed items starting to disappear. They suspected the cleaning ladies and reviewed surveillance video. The video allegedly showed Hendzel and Tumminello searching through file cabinets where credit union member's personal information could be accessed.

The two are also allegedly seen on tape stealing some drinks.

Detectives went to the home of Hendzel and Larry Monick on Orchard Street in Stowe Township. The couple said Tumminello was living in a bedroom upstairs. When they went to her room, they found empty stamp bags and hypodermic needles. They also found an open box containing credit union paperwork and confidential files belonging to credit union members.

Tumminello agreed to go to Zone 6 police for an interview. Police said she was wearing a Pittsburgh Police Federal Credit Union sweatshirt during the interview. She admitted to them that it was stolen. She also admitted to stealing items from the credit union.

According to the criminal complaint, both Tumminello and Hendzel told officers they thought about taking the customers information, having a friend make fake identification cards and using those for personal gain. They both said they intended to apply for credit cards, buy items and use the fake IDs to sell those items to pawn shops.

The credit union sent out a letter to its customers saying it will offer credit monitoring services to those whose information was compromised. It also promised to change its hiring process for janitorial staff.

Both woman face charges of identity theft, burglary, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property.

They remain locked up in the Allegheny County Jail.
