Want Beer? Local Eateries Can Deliver

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - Thirsty for a cold one but don't want to leave the house? Well, certain establishments with the proper license can deliver beer, and the thing is, it's never been illegal.

Jake Fait, owner of Roff School Tavern in Meadville, Pennsylvania, asked the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board what the law was. He and Stacy Kriedeman, the public relations director for the LCB, joined the KDKA Morning News with Larry Richert and John Shumway to explain what they found.

Fait said he got the idea when "we were looking at our business plan and what we could do" to increase income. He adds their original plan was to see if they could have their customers order online and have it delivered by mail.

He says that was "immediately shot down; however, [the LCB] took it a step further and looked into the actual delivery."

Kriedeman says that after investigation, delivery of beer "is not mentioned in the liquor code."

If an establishment wants to deliver beer, they have to get a transporter for hire license, "which would allow you to transport up to 192 fluid ounces, which is basically two six packs," says Kriedeman.

The same liability that comes with a regular liquor license also comes with the transport license.

"They must still not be serving anyone under the age of 21 or visibly intoxicated patrons wherever that is occurring," Kriedeman says.

Kriedeman also points out that "the sale must take place on the licensed premises." That means you have to call ahead and pay for the beer over the phone.

Fait says they haven't decided at the Roff School Tavern if they are going to apply for a license. One of the things they are considering is the added pressure that will be put on delivery drivers to enforce the rules of the LCB.

Kriedeman says just in the past two weeks, 22 establishments across the state have applied for the $160 annual license fee. There is also an initial filing fee of $700.

She adds that it should only take a "couple weeks" to process the license applications.
