Freezing Rain, Winter Weather Advisories Issued With Another System Moving In

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) – Parts of the Northeast got their first real taste of winter Saturday as a storm crawling up the coast left a slushy, snowy coating from Pennsylvania to New England, but forecasters are watching a possible second shot of snow that could affect the region early in the work week.

Because of that possibility, locally, a Freezing Rain Advisory and Winter Weather Advisory have been issued for much of the area.

Latest Forecast:

"We had a little light snow move through overnight, an inch or two in most locations. Right now, it looks like some spotty freezing drizzle is starting to show up," said KDKA's Jon Burnett.

By midday Saturday, the first storm system had dropped 9 inches in parts of Pennsylvania and 8 inches in parts of New York, northern New Jersey and northwestern Connecticut, with widespread reports over 4 inches in inland areas across the southern New England region.

Lighter amounts were reported in Philadelphia, New York City and Boston.

The storm was expected to drop up to 8 inches in far eastern Maine before moving out late Saturday night.

Numerous accidents were reported on the slick roads but no major highway backups in the lighter weekend traffic. Speed limits were reduced on some highways for a time Saturday morning.

Rain and sleet mixed in with the snow in areas that saw above-freezing temperatures nearer to the coast, keeping totals down in those areas before the storm began to taper off.

"It's not really bad out there, as long as you don't drive like a maniac," Vernon Forrest of Manchester, New Jersey, said while getting some coffee and a sandwich at a convenience store in Toms River. "The road crews did an excellent job and we got more rain and sleet here than snow, so it's mostly just wet roads. So just keep an eye out for slippery, slushy spots and speeding knuckleheads."

But people were urged to watch for icy roads as temperatures dropped below freezing into Sunday morning.

The National Weather Service issued a Freezing Rain Advisory for Allegheny County and much of the surrounding area Saturday, in effect until 1 a.m. Sunday.

"Be very careful if you're out traveling about tonight and early tomorrow because of that freezing rain," said Burnett.

Winds gusting to 50 mph were expected on Cape Cod and nearby islands Saturday night as the storm moves away.

Meanwhile, another system beginning Sunday night into Monday is expected to drop another round of snow across Pennsylvania.

A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect at 1 p.m. Sunday and continues through 1 p.m. Monday. Burnett says the most active period will be between midnight and 6 a.m. on Monday.

"[Sunday], we have a Winter Weather Advisory in effect for snow that will be coming in as we head through the day," said Burnett. "This is primarily a Sunday night into Monday kind of event that will pile up on the order of anywhere from three to six inches of snow by noon Monday. So watch out for that Monday morning commute, things will be very active around here."

After that comes through, Burnett says we can expect cloudy and cold conditions Tuesday and Wednesday, and milder conditions Thursday with a rain-snow mix.
