Woman Dies In Monroeville Fire, Officials Looking Into Cause

MONROEVILLE (KDKA)- Officials are looking into the cause of a fire that killed a woman in Monroeville early Thursday morning.

The fire started just before 1 a.m. at a house in the 1300-block of Hillsdale Drive.

When crews arrived, the first floor was engulfed in flames.

"We had reports the resident was trapped in the house," said Monroeville Volunteer Fire Company No. 4 Chief Scott Feyes. "We found her inside the front door and were able to remove her from the home. We believe she was trying to get out."

The woman was rushed to Forbes Hospital, where she later died from her injuries. She has been identified as 77-year-old Mary Gentile. An autopsy will be performed later on Thursday.

The Allegheny County Fire Marshal is looking into the cause of the fire.

Several firefighters were hurt fighting the fire as well.

"With cold weather, lots of ice, a couple of firefighters fell," said Chief Feyes. "A couple were injured and taken to the hospital, minor injuries."
