Residents Ask Arnold Officials To Make Intersection Safer After Repeated Crashes

ARNOLD (KDKA) -- Another car careening into a home has residents of one Westmoreland County neighborhood living in fear, and some are abandoning their houses to move elsewhere.

The intersection of Leishmand and Murray Avenues in Arnold is a bad neighborhood, not because of anyone who lives there, but because of the intersection itself.

Over the last year, the homes there have been hit by out-of-control vehicles multiple times.

"I live in fear and I should not be," says Cynthia Headen, a neighbor. "I shouldn't have to live like that."

This weekend, Headen's front porch cameras captured a car swerving to the left and slamming into Alicia Phillips home next door.

"We had just taken off our coats and put hot cocoa on and a car hit," said Phillips.

The passenger in the vehicle suffered injuries. Phillips's home has significant damage.

But this is nothing new.

"Three this week, four in a year," said Phillips.

A few weeks ago, Headen's cameras caught another of the accidents.

"I put my truck in front of my house. I use my truck to protect my house," said Headen. "Hit my truck, and not my house. Like it's done everyone else's."

The owner of another home abandoned it after a car literally drove through it last year. Homeowners at the bottom of the hill want something, anything done.

"At least make it a one way; at least in the winter, and we don't have to worry about it," said Headen. "And we'll be safe."

Residents here say the city tells them these are all coincidences. KDKA tried to contact officials, but we were unsuccessful.

In the meantime, Headen and Phillips say they have no option other than to hope the roads are clear.

"It's getting scary, it is," said Headen.

"They're pretty close to having quite a few desolate houses on this street," said Phillips. "You can't live in constant fear for your family."
