Public Works Driver Trapped After Salt Truck Crashes, Flips On Side

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The driver of a salt truck had to be cut from the vehicle after it crashed and flipped on its side in Pittsburgh's Elliott neighborhood late Monday night.

The crash happened in the 100-block of Danley Street.

The Public Works truck with a plow, and carrying salt, lost control on the ice, slid into a hillside and overturned.

"Medics and fire crews were able to extract the driver from the vehicle," said Pittsburgh's Chief Operations Officer Guy Costa. "They had to cut open the cab of the vehicle to get him out, but the good thing is he is safe."

Costa went on to say the Public Works truck was totaled in the crash.

The driver was taken to the hospital as a precaution. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Costa says people need to be careful when leaving their homes this morning.

"For a lot of people, when they get out, along the street, their parking areas, their sidewalks that were wet yesterday are going to be ice this morning," Costa said.
