Jeannette Superintendent Outlines New Security Measures Following Teen's Death

JEANNETTE (KDKA) -- A local student, who was found shot and killed at a home in Westmoreland County, was laid to rest this morning.

Ryan Mangan, 16, was killed in his Jeannette home last week.

Police have charged 16-year-old Maxwell Morton with first degree murder, criminal homicide and possession of a firearm by a minor for his alleged connection to the incident.

Police say Morton sent a selfie of himself next to Mangan's body to another boy, using the app Snapchat.

Investigators say he later confessed to the murder, but a motive is still unclear. Morton is scheduled to be in court next week.

In the meantime, the superintendent of Jeannette City School District sent a letter home to parents outlining some additional security measures that the school is adding.

There will be police on campus to help increase security. The district is also encouraging parents to monitor their children's social media posts.

"These security measures may at times seem like an inconvenience but rest assured they are in place for the safety of our children," says the statement from Doctor Matthew Hutcheson. "The administrative and instructional staff will work together to provide the highest degree of safety for all students." To read the full statement, click here.

Many students attended Mangan's funeral this morning at Sacred Heart Church in Jeannette.

The school district is making counselors available to help students deal with the loss.
