5 Injured In Somerset Co. School Bus Crash

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – Five people were injured when a school bus collided with a minivan in Somerset County Monday morning.

According to emergency dispatchers, the accident happened along Glades Pike in Jefferson Township around 7:30 a.m.

The bus, carrying 13 students - grades kindergarten to ninth, was traveling westbound, when a minivan traveling east lost control and slammed into the front end.

"There was a small school bus headed west, headed toward Westmoreland County to Valley School," said Trooper Scott Kovash, of Pennsylvania State Police. "There was a passenger vehicle headed east. As it was rounding a curve, it lost control and stuck the school bus in the front."

The minivan's driver was flown to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, which is a level two trauma center.

One student on the bus was also taken to the same hospital.

The bus driver and two other students were taken to Somerset Hospital.

"The occupant of the minivan was flown to Conemaugh Medical Center in Johnstown, and the driver of the school bus was transported by ground to Somerset Hospital," said Trooper Kovash. "There were also three students injured. One of those students was taken to Johnstown, and the other two were taken to Somerset."

None of the students suffered any life-threatening injuries. The conditions of both vehicle drivers are not known.

Names of the victims have not been released at this time.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.

Investigators aren't saying if road conditions played a factor.
