Pittsburghers Forced To Battle Brutally Cold Temperatures

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - If you have lived in Pittsburgh long enough, you know how cold it has to be for the Allegheny River to be frozen over.

At the Point, it looks like a snow-covered field.

However, some people aren't fortunate enough to get in out of the cold.

Every day, rain, shine or freezing cold, Rahman Hafiz delivers the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette to his downtown customers.

"I keep moving, you know? I do deliveries downtown so instead of just standing in one spot, I have particular people that I see and I deliver their paper to them, and every now and then, I step inside a building and warm up for five or ten minutes and get back on it," Hafiz said.

Crews in Ross Township had to brave wind chills of nearly 20 below as they worked to repair a water main break near the intersection of McKnight and Siebert Roads this morning.

In Oakland, parents hoping to score the best seats for this weekend's WPIAL swimming championships camped out at Trees Pool.

"Great spirits. This little bit of cold weather [isn't going to] turn anyone away and definitely like to do it. We make it a yearly event Go Shaler," Ed Cercone said.

For others, just getting to work took a lot of effort to stay warm enough.

"It's hard to explain it. It's so cold the wind it's just -- cutting. Cutting through your head just making you feel like it's unbearable," DaMond Brock said.

"I even put sweatpants over my jeans today to go to work. I got the goggles, scarf, hat, gloves -- just trying not to get frostbite out here man, it's freezing," Sean McGann said.

It looks like there is going to be a weekend warm-up, but still we are not out of the woods just yet because we could be dealing with rain, sleet and freezing snow.
