Record-Breaking Cold Causing Problems, More Snow On The Way

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The latest round of frigid weather to move into our area has actually set a couple of records.

According to KDKA-TV Meteorologist Dennis Bowman, the record low for Feb. 20 was minus-2 degrees, which was set back in 1936 and matched in 1968.

That record fell this morning as temperatures plummeted to minus-8 degrees.

But, that's not the only record to have been set.

Thursday's high of 7 degrees edged out the lowest recorded high temperature for Feb. 19 by two degrees. The previous record of 9 degrees was set back in 1936 as well.

We could see another record fall on Tuesday as well, but time will tell.

Before we get that far, there's some snow closing in that should arrive early Saturday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for much of the viewing area. It will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday.

By the time the storm wraps up Saturday evening, we can expect to see about 4-7 inches of snow.

As for today, the extreme cold is causing problems around the area.

Water was still flowing down a North Side road Friday morning thanks to a big water main break.

The break happened around 11 p.m. Thursday along Anderson Street, which runs under the Parkway North.

Overnight, crews decided to block off Anderson Street between General Robinson Boulevard and Stockton Avenue.

The closure may also affect people who use the HOV lanes on the Parkway North. One of the offramps from the HOV lanes runs right down to Anderson Street.

Another water main break was reported on McKnight Road near the mall. The water was quickly turned off and crews are at the scene.

According to Duquesne Light, about 600 customers in Dormont were affected by a power outage Thursday night.

The outage was reported just before 10:20 p.m. As of around 3 a.m., everyone had power restored.

Up to 200 West Penn Power customers in Chicora are currently without power along Chicora Fenelton Road.

In Clinton Township, about 100 Central Electric Cooperative customers lost power around 4 a.m.

According to West Penn Power, roughly 100 residents in Clay Township were also without power this morning. However, service was expected to be restored around 7 a.m.
