Police Investigating After 2-Month-Old Found Unresponsive, Dies

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police are investigating after a 2-month-old child was found unresponsive on the South Side Slopes Wednesday morning and later died.

The child was found unresponsive at a home in the 2500-block of Leticoe Street. She was given CPR and taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital, where she passed away.

The little girl has been identified as Amelia Pagano.

No charges have been filed at this time, but police are calling the death suspicious and say the matter is under investigation.

"It is highly unlikely that a [2-month-old] goes into cardiac arrest and is found unresponsive. Our homicide units as well as our felony teams responded to that location. We are currently waiting to interview the mother who, as you can imagine, is traumatized," Pittsburgh Police Commander RaShall Brackney said.

Meanwhile, neighbors are devastated.

"It's awful," said Ben Auman, a neighbor. "I had to sit down when I heard about it. This is something that happened right next door to me; it's terrible."

One neighbor who did not want to identified told KDKA's Brenda Waters that he is devastated about what happened to the baby girl, but not surprised.

"Monday, around 9 a.m., I saw who I assume is the father of the baby walking down the street," the neighbor said. "It was 22 degrees, carrying the baby with nothing but a diaper, no cover, no clothes, nothing."

Neighbors also say the home is a nuisance property.

"Lots of problems, lots of problems, cops have been called to the house many, many times over the years, different people moving in and out," said Auman.

Police are waiting for the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office to complete an autopsy on the baby. They say that will direct their investigation.
