PennDOT Offers Suggestions For Getting Through Construction Season

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Even PennDOT admits it's concerned about the new traffic pattern on the Parkway.

And it has some suggestions for anyone who has to drive through the construction zone.

If you've driven on the Parkway, the bobsled run is back and it's longer than last year and feels just as tight. As you share the space with fellow drivers, it's much closer than most people's normal comfort level.

"Now you're in the 10-and-a-half-foot lanes, you're in basically a very narrow area," said Dan Cessna with PennDOT. "This is where we encourage everyone to drive with great care, both hands on the wheel, all eyes on the road."

Cessna says many of last fall's accidents were caused by distracted drivers. And as was reported early Monday morning, a single stalled car in the inbound restricted lane caused a monumental back-up.

"It only takes one and it can screw the traffic up for the entire morning commute, which is exactly what happened," says Cessna.

And the restrictions are not finished. Over the next few days, a barrier will be in the Carnegie Interchange area along the white line and outbound traffic is not driving in part on the inbound lanes.

PennDOT plans to tear out existing concrete and pour fresh – a process that won't be quick and with only two lanes.

"'Till the end of the year, you're going to have this type of work somewhere along this entire corridor this entire season," said Cessna.
