Liriano Ready For Second Straight Opening Day Start

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - Francisco Liriano says he was a little surprised that Clint Hurdle named him Opening Day starter.

"We've got so many good guys here that no matter who's getting the ball will make it a good decision," Liriano says. "I was kind of surprised but also excited and looking forward to Opening Day [April 6 in Cincinnati]."

Hurdle said they also considered Gerrit Cole and AJ Burnett and that any of the 3 would be a worthy choice but cited Liriano's kill and experience, perhaps also remembering that last season Liriano struck out 10 over 6 scoreless innings in a 1-0 Opening Day win over the Cubs.

The last Pirates pitcher to make consecutive Opening Day starts was Oliver Perez in 2005 and 2006.
