Police Probe Similar Thefts In Brentwood, South Side

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- She's seen walking up to a home and helping herself to a package on the front porch. And now, several other communities are reporting similar thefts.

Pittsburgh Police are investigating a South Side theft and Brentwood Police are investigating a similar theft not long after that over the weekend.

In both cases, police have surveillance footage from either the victim or a neighbor.

Surveillance video taken on the South Side from the camera the victim installed near his front door shows, he says, someone he doesn't know - with a stroller and child in tow - coming right up to his doorstep, opening his front door and taking recently delivered packages away.

A few hours later, video was captured by a neighbor of another victim in Brentwood. Once again the packages are taken by a woman not authorized to do so. The neighbor alerted the victim who called Brentwood Police. Police then posted the video to their Facebook page.

KDKA's Harold Hayes: "When you saw what you were able to capture on your camera, what went through your mind?"

"Well, I was afraid cause I've had things stolen off my porch before, and I know that's a single mother over there, and you know, she doesn't deserve to have things stolen off her porch," the neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, said.

The neighbor says he installed the system to cope with an era when it's not a bad idea to be safe.

"I have the cameras just to keep track of my daughter, but you know, it's just a shame that you can't have things delivered to your house or you have to watch like everything going on," he said.

"I've been here for quite some time and never witnessed anything like that. It's very shocking," said another neighbor.

Police say it's too early to speculate about whether the woman on the South Side is the same person in Brentwood. But anyone with information about either case is asked to call either Pittsburgh or Brentwood Police.
