Building Inspector Called After Bricks Fall From Squirrel Hill Building

SQURREL HILL (KDKA) - Part of a building in Squirrel Hill is crumbling.

Bricks started falling from the building's facade Sunday night. Now, the businesses in that building are trying to figure out when they can re-open.

Cleanup began Monday morning after something caused a portion of the brick building to fall.

It happened after 11 p.m. Sunday along Northumberland Street.

David Tkacik, who manages the building, says he got the message last night from Pittsburgh Police.

"The police station's right next door so they let us know and so we came out, cordoned off the area and then summoned the appropriate people to take care of the problem," Tkacik said.

Rabbi Mordy Rudolph, who is executive director of the Friendship Circle, says he got the text messages about what happened. He then found out that his non-profit would be closed until it could be cleared.

"It's probably our busiest, we have a fundraiser coming up on April 19 and we have Passover this week. So, this is kind of our crunch time. There's never a good time for these things to happen, but this probably wasn't our most ideal," he said.

The Northumberland Dry Cleaners was also shut down, which caused a bit of confusion for customers this morning.

No one was hurt and the people who live in apartments above the two buildings were able to stay.

Northumberland Dry Cleaners and Friendship Circle are both back open.

What caused the wall to crumble is being investigated.

Once the bricks are cleaned up, the building inspector will come and deem that it is safe.

Then, both of these buildings will reopen, which could happen today.
