City Council Honors Penguins' Announcer With "Mike Lange Day"

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Tuesday may not have been "a hockey night in Pittsburgh," but it was "Mike Lange Day."

The legendary Pittsburgh Penguins announcer was honored in City Council chambers Tuesday morning.

"Mike Lange is in his 40th season as voice of the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play," City Council member Dan Gilman announced, as March 31 was declared "Mike Lange Day" in the city of Pittsburgh.

The veteran announcer thanked the council with a medley of famous phrases:

"You make me really want to scratch my back with a hacksaw by acknowledging me. You make me want to call Arnold Slick from Turtle Crick. And you also make me want to smile like a butcher's dog!"

Lange said he was blessed to find himself in a city that celebrated quirky broadcasters like Pirates' announcer Bob Prince, and Steelers' commentator Myron Cope.

"And it'd make Cope and it would make Prince very happy that I'm getting this," he remarked. "And that makes me feel good, too. Those guys were special, special people."

Mike Lange was born in Sacramento, but his home is Pittsburgh.

"Every place we go on the road, they still want to come back to Pittsburgh," he said. "And I'm proud to say I'm still here."
