Mayor Welcomes New Family Member, Adopts Dog From Humane Society

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh has a new top dog!

The Western Pennsylvania Humane Society says Mayor Bill Peduto has adopted one of their shelter dogs.

Lilly, the city's new first dog, is a lovable 3-year-old Boston Terrier. She is described as "loving, affectionate and engaging."

Mayor Peduto says he's been looking to add a furry friend to his family.

"Caitlin and I had been looking for a dog, and Lilly happened to come through the Western PA Humane Society," said Mayor Peduto in a press release. "She was exactly what we were looking for; a dog with great behavior, mature, and special needs looking for a loving home."

He says he plans to bring Lilly to visit his office in the City County Building often.

The Humane Society says they are thrilled the mayor chose adoption.

"We are delighted that our Mayor chose to adopt, not shop," said Joy Braunstein, the shelter's executive director, in a press release. "We applaud Mayor Peduto for setting an example, and spotlighting the fact that shelter pets come in all shapes, sizes, and breeds."

They also say Lilly has a mild eye condition, but with daily care she's just fine.
