5 People Escape Jeannette House Fire

JEANNETTE (KDKA) - Five people were able to make it out of a burning home in Jeannette early Thursday morning.

The fire was spotted by a neighbor around 1:45 a.m. at a house in the 700-block of St. Clair Avenue.

"The smoke was really bad. I opened the door and that's all I saw. Didn't see flames, just smoke," the homeowner said.

Just five more minutes, and it could have been too late for the mother and her four adult children. Her husband was at work. Thankfully, their two neighbors, a teen and his dad, saved the day.

"I thank them very much. They saved our lives today," she said.

The neighbors noticed the fire on their way home from Walmart last night.

"Grabbed clothes and what I could and got out of here," she said.

Some of the kids were using the fire pit last night, and while all fingers point to it as the cause, the family isn't so sure.

"When I came home it was out and they weren't even out here and it's way over here," she said.

Fortunately, the house is still livable. But the back wall in the kitchen was heavily damaged.

The rest of the house suffered some smoke damage. The family says they'll pull through together.

"In 40 years, never. It's hard. Really hard," the homeowner said.

The fire marshal is on scene investigating the cause of the fire.
