Firefighter Hospitalized While Battling Wilmerding Fire

WILMERDING (KDKA) -- One firefighter had to be taken to the hospital Monday night while battle a two-alarm fire that damaged an apartment building in Wilmerding.

The blaze broke out around 9:15 p.m. at the four-story Park House apartments in the 400-block of Commerce Street.

According to Wilmerding Fire Chief Tom Hartzell, the fire was confined to a second-floor apartment.

The fire chief says crews were able to knock it down quickly.

"Interior crews did a fantastic job," said Chief Hartzell.

Everyone was able to get out safely. No residents were injured.

However, Chief Hartzell said one firefighter was hospitalized for chest pains.

The building is located right around the corner from the fire station.

"Crews were already at the station; we just finished up a meeting, so we were in pretty quick," the chief said.

The cause is under investigation.

"We have Allegheny County Fire Marshal and our local fire marshal going through, investigating," said Chief Hartzell. "They'll determine a cause."
