Annual Tekko Convention Brings Together Fans Of Japanese Pop Culture

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- You might do a double-take when you see some of the young people gathering Downtown this weekend.

They're in town, and dressed to impress, for a celebration of Japanese pop culture.

It's called Tekko 2015. And it's a convention that brings together fans of Japanese pop culture.

Many who attend dress up as their favorite characters, and when you talk with them, it may sound like they're speaking another language.

Those who take part in the cosplay say getting into character is part of the experience.

"A place where everyone is having fun and being somebody else for a day or a weekend," says Han Alexander, of Pittsburgh.

And if this seems a little odd, consider this; organizers say Tekko is getting bigger every year.

"This is our 13th year. We've had growth attendance last year; this year we're planning a record attendance," said Jack Varney, the convention's director or marketing.

And people attending for the first time like what they see.

"This is our first time and it's awesome. I'm definitely gonna come back here again," said Victoria Vanscyoc, of Plum.

Tekko offers something for fans of anime, gaming, music and more. It's a chance to share the love of their favorite things that come from half a world away.
