YMCA Hosting Healthy Kids Day This Weekend

The YMCA has big plans for this weekend.

It's the organization's Healthy Kids Day, which is like a national open house to let families know about the Y's programs.

The group's new national director says this is especially important during the summer months when kids are looking for things to keep them active, and in some cases, well-fed, since children who get free breakfast and lunch at school don't get that during summer vacation.

"We're opening it up so people understand that we're strengthening the foundation of the community," said YMCA National Director Kevin Washington. "We look at the summer months and the gaps in children's lives in the summer months and the Y is filling those gaps, summer learning, nutrition and water safety and we're filling those gaps. The Y owns the summer."

A total of 1,300 YMCA branches across the country are participating in Healthy Kids Day this Saturday.
