Two Plum Municipal Officials On Paid Leave For Undisclosed Charges

PLUM (KDKA) -- First, two Plum High School teachers were accused of having sex with students.

Then, another teacher was accused of victim intimidation.

Now, in a totally unrelated matter in the same community, Plum Borough officials have confirmed that two senior municipal officials have been put on paid administrative leave.

Municipal manager Michael Thomas confirmed that last week he put his assistant manager Greg Bachy and planning director Jason Straley on leave.

Thomas told KDKA political editor Jon Delano that, as an ongoing personnel matter, he could not go into detail about the possible wrongdoing except to say the focus was not primarily the misuse of borough cell phones and computers.

Thomas was not available to appear on camera.

But plenty of residents were upset because Bachy and Straley were put on paid administrative leave rather than simply leave without pay or summarily fired.

"I disagree with the fact that they should be getting paid for violating policies of the borough or any other business," said Mark Delahunty, a Plum resident.

"We're actually rewarding them," he added. "We're giving them a paid vacation."

"They should be fired. That's what I think," said Walter Berkoski, another Plum resident. "They should treat everyone equal."

This resident was referring to Plum Borough police officer Jeremy Cumberledge who was fired last year after accessing other borough employees' computer files.

The paid leave for Bachy and Straley may be short-lived. Council will decide on Monday night what final action should be taken on this matter.
