Armstrong Co. Man Jailed After Threatening To Kill Self

KITTANNING (KDKA) – An Armstrong County man was arrested after allegedly threatening to kill himself, leaving one woman injured in the process.

Police say 25-year-old Andrew Bittenbender was waving around a knife and threatening to kill himself. According to the police report, five other people were at the Kittanning Township home at the time, ranging in age from 5 months to 63 years.

In the process of trying to disarm Bittenbender, his 27-year-old fiance was injured when she grabbed the knife and ran into a wall. She was later taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Bittenbender's father says his son is only a danger to himself, because he's on drugs and needs help.

"He did not threaten to kill everyone in the family," said Lee Roy Bittenbender. "He threatened to kill himself. He said, 'I'll kill myself and everyone can forget about me.'"

Other family members say Bittenbender tried to hurt them, but his father says that's not the case. He says it all happened because of his son's heroin addiction.

"He needed to go to rehab," said Lee Roy. "he didn't need all this jail time."

Bittenbender was arrested and charged on multiple counts, including aggravated assault and terroristic threats.

He is currently in the Armstrong County jail.
