Report: MLB Players Want Shorter Season
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - With 162 games in just 183 days, meaning just 21 days off per season, it should come as no surprise that baseball players have explored the idea of a shortened season.
As CBSSports.com baseball writer Mike Axisa reports, with the current collective bargaining agreement between MLB and the Players Union set to expire after the 2016 season, the MLBPA has expressed interest in a 154 game season.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred addressed that idea saying, "I think in the 20-something years I've worked in the game, there's more conversation about it than there has been in a long time."
Major League Baseball would certainly fight hard to prevent any shortening of the season given the amount of money they would lose, even just by cutting the season by eight games, like the players have explored.
The current 162-game schedule has been in place since 1962 when the National League followed the American League's lead after they had switched to a 162-game schedule in 1961.
