Steelers Begin Rookie Minicamp

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - The Steelers new draft picks, undrafted rookie free agents and players the team has brought in for tryouts, kicked off the first day of the rookie minicamp with enthusiasm today.

The mini-camp is a chance for new guys to battle for a spot on the roster and show the coaches what they can bring to the Steelers.

Fourth round draft pick, Doran Grant said the first day went well and he plans to work hard to prove himself during the next few days.

"If you hustle and listen you will make a great impression because you will understand what you are doing and get to the ball," Grant said.

The Ohio State graduate was a leader on the silver bullet Buckeye defense and he called the Steelers defense the NFL version of Ohio State.

"Just the grittiness, everybody runs to the ball, 11 bodies on the ball every time, there's a history of playing great defense here," Grant said.

For many of the draft picks one of the biggest priorities is learning the extensive playbook in a short amount of time.

Sammie Coates said he only knows a few things so far so he's just taking it slow, working hard and keeping a positive attitude.

"You still have to answer the bell when they need you," the Steelers third-round draft pick said. "It's all about hard work from here on out."

With Ike Taylor and Troy Polamalu both retiring over the off-season, the Steelers developed a need for more depth at cornerback going into the draft. The Steelers chose Senguez Golson, a cornerback out of Ole Miss in the second round to fill that void.

Golson said he doesn't know what his role will be, but he's prepared to work a lot in the nickel and on the outside as well.

"I am just here to do whatever they need me to do right now," Golson said.
