Weekly Vesla 360 Injury Report

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) – In his weekly Vesla 360 Injury Report, former Pirates trainer Frank Velasquez talks with Andrew Fillipponi about the recent Pittsburgh Marathon, how he helped train runners for it and the recovery process from running 26.2 miles.

Velasquez first talked about what it's like training runners at his facility and how long it takes for them to be fully ready for this grueling task.

"You're looking at about 16 weeks if you're starting from a base of 5 miles," Velasquez said. "Lets say you run just recreationally for conditioning five miles or so, about 16 weeks, a good four months to train for a full marathon and I'd say you can chop that down to about 8-10 weeks for a half marathon.

Velasquez also talks about the nutrition they keep track of for their runners preparing for a marathon.

"We're always talking to all of our clients about daily nutrition, weekly nutrition plans," Velasquez told us. "With the marathoners, we actually did a couple of talks the weeks leading up to the marathon to a couple of different groups to help them for race day."
