Adopted Yorkie Put Up For Sale Returned To Animal Rescue League

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- One of the orphaned Yorkies that was adopted and then put up for sale online has now been returned to the Animal Rescue League.

According to an update on the Animal Rescue League's Facebook page, the dog was voluntarily returned on Monday "after the adopter decided it was the best option for the dog and her family."

About 1,700 people were put into a pool to adopt the 18 Yorkies that had been rescued from the North Side earlier this month after their owner died.

Last week, one of the chosen adopters listed her dog for sale on Pittsburgh Flea Market.

Her post partially read, "Have a Yorkie that is the sweetest baby boy … everybody is all allergic and it's killing me emotionally … he's one of the Yorkies from the news."

The adopter told the Animal Rescue League that the post was only "an attempt to find a solution to an allergic reaction." And after talking with her, shelter officials say they believe the family's intent was not "financial gain."

"When people adopt from us, they sign a contract and in that contract it states they cannot give the animal away or sell that animal," said Animal Rescue League Executive Director Dan Rossi last week. "If there is an issue they need to return it to us."

Now that the dog is back in the care of the Animal Rescue, the shelter says it is beginning the process of finding a home that will be a better fit for the dog.
