Pedro Alvarez Hits Boat With Long Home Run, Boat Owner Wants Ball Back

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Pirates lost 8-5 to the Minnesota Twins last night, but fans are still buzzing about a spectacular homer by Pedro Alvarez.

In the fourth inning, Alvarez smashed a 461-foot solo home run that landed in a boat docked outside the park.

It was only the third time someone has reached the Allegheny River on the fly since PNC Park opened in 2001.

The boat's owner, Ryan Stacheleck of Shaler, joined "The Fan Morning Show" to talk about the ball that flew into his 18-foot boat docked outside PNC Park.

"I was down there, had the wife out to dinner, and we're sitting there in the restaurant, and I look up and I knew he hit the home run, but I didn't realize it went out of the stadium. All of a sudden, my boat's on the screen. I see a guy in my boat, he's gotta be going for the cooler, there's beer in there," Stacheleck said.

Stacheleck said he was more concerned for the cooler of beer, than the actual ball.

"He was probably walking down the river walk, saw a ball went in there, and he decided to go in there and grab it like any Pittsburgh jagoff I guess," he said. "I think that guy deserves to give that ball back. That thing is probably already on Craigslist."

Ryan's wife, Tina, also talked to "The Fan Morning Show," but she's more interested in getting the baseball back.

"I want that ball back. What are the chances that a home run ball gets hit into a boat," she said. "Right after it happened, I was on Twitter, Facebook, trying to figure out how to get that ball back."

Despite the achievement, Alvarez was more concerned about the outcome of the game.

"I was just happy I could put a good swing on the ball. Obviously, those are things you don't really think about. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the win today and that kind of trumps everything else," Alvarez said.
