3 Injured In Wilkins Twp. Violent Head-On Crash

WILKINS TOWNSHIP (KDKA)- Allegheny County homicide detectives are looking into a violent head-on crash in Wilkins Township that left three people injured.

According to police, the crash happened around 1:50 a.m. Wednesday in the 500-block of Brown Avenue, near a school bus garage.

Allegheny County Police say the 24-year-old driving a Geo Prizm crossed the center line and crashed into a minivan.

"He was actually unconscious at the time, but he appeared to have chest and head injuries," Wilkins Township Police Sgt. Randy Lamb said.

Initially, two people were transported to the hospital from the scene. The 41-year-old woman driving the minivan was taken to Forbes Hospital with a broken ankle.

The man driving the car was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital with critical injuries.

"All airbags were deployed in both vehicles. The driver of the van was actually outside the vehicle when I arrived on scene. The wreckage was pretty severe to the passenger car so we are unable to tell if he was wearing a seat belt," Sgt. Lamb said.

A male passenger in the Prizm initially refused treatment, but was later taken to Forbes Hospital with a shoulder injury.

Sgt. Lamb said the passenger was pretty shaken up and couldn't really account for the moments leading up to the crash.

"He said it happened so quickly that he didn't really know what happened," Sgt. Lamb said.

Police say all of the victims in the crash are from Pitcairn.

Police blocked off the scene for around four hours while they reconstructed the crash. County homicide detectives are investigating the cause of the crash.

As per normal procedure, Allegheny County Police say they are waiting for blood results to determine if the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
