1 Dead, Another Hospitalized After Fire At South Fayette Apartment

SOUTH FAYETTE TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- Authorities are investigating after fire swept through an apartment complex in South Fayette Township Wednesday evening, leaving one person dead and sending another to the hospital.

According to the South Fayette Police chief, the fire was first reported around 7 p.m. at the Valley Field Apartments located in the 3500-block of Washington Pike.

Firefighters quickly responded and found two people inside the apartment.

"Within four minutes the fire department was on scene and they pulled an individual from the apartment who is deceased," said South Fayette Police Chief John Phoennik. "There is a second individual in the apartment who is at the hospital being treated for smoke inhalation."

The victim has been identified as 80-year-old Albert Camburn. He was pronounced dead at the scene and an autopsy will be done on Thursday.

Camburn's wife was able to escape the fire. She was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

"When I had talked to his wife, he was bed-ridden so she was taking care of him," neighbor Mindy Eustis said. "So, yeah it was pretty sad."

One apartment was destroyed and the other units had minimal damage.

The police chief says they have turned the investigation over to the Allegheny County Fire Marshal and Allegheny County Police.
