Former Pittsburgh Police Chief Released From Illinois Prison

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Former Pittsburgh police chief Nate Harper has been released from a federal prison in Illinois.

A spokesman at the Federal Correction Institution in Pekin, Illinois, says 62-year-old Harper was released Friday.

He said he had no information on whether Harper was released to home confinement or a halfway house.

Harper pleaded guilty in October 2013 to charges of conspiracy and failing to file income tax returns.

Authorities alleged that he diverted more than $70,000 from a city account and used almost $32,000 for personal expenses.

A federal judge sentenced Harper last year to 18 months in prison and ordered him to pay restitution.

Harper joined the city's police force in 1977 and rose through its ranks to become chief in 2006.
